New Issue Explores Women's Role in Dental Research

International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research

Alexandria, VA, USA - The Journal of Dental Research (JDR) has announced the publication of a new issue of Advances in Dental Research, a supplement to the Journal of Dental Research (JDR), entitled, " Women in Dental, Clinical, and Translational Research ."

The 2024 Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) and the Canadian Association for Dental Research featured a two-day "Meeting Within a Meeting" on the topic of "Women in Dental, Clinical, and Translational Research" organized by AADOCR Then- President Alexandre Vieira. During these sessions, speakers were challenged to reflect on how women are differentially affected by health and societal issues by factors that go beyond biology. The goal was to promote current research on women issues that are relevant to dental, oral, and craniofacial scientists. These sessions are summarized in the upcoming issue of Advances in Dental Research.

Day one provided an overview of sex biology and the origin of sex disparities, the impact of such disparities on the well-being of women, an analysis of the effect of autoimmune diseases on women, and the impact of gender on TMD and orofacial pain processes in the brain. Day two focused on incorporating sex as a biological variable into clinical and translational training, promoting health for underserved populations, and the role of heart disease as a leading cause of death among women.

"To tackle the gap in understanding how dental disease affects women, a focused approach is needed that integrates principles of genetics, cellular and molecular physiology, and pharmacology into dental research," said AADOCR Past President Alexandre Vieira. "It is essential to highlight ongoing research related to women's dental health, showcase key areas of interest, and pinpoint where knowledge is currently lacking."

The Meeting Within a Meeting concluded that health promotion for underserved women should encompass gender and health equity and include access to dental care, oral health education, oral health promotion during pregnancy, and cultural competency. It should also address intersectionality to target oral health disparities, incorporate community-based interventions, policy, and advocacy. Collaborative partnerships, preventive care and early intervention, and the empowerment and self-care of women are essential components in this comprehensive approach.
