On a humid, warm September day, two 250-litre tanks with wastewater are set up in a lab on DTU Lyngby Campus. The wastewater is cleaned of sludge as part of an experiment, but no smell is detected inside the cool room.
The neutralization of bad smell is good news for the 300 staff and students who use the facilities in the new laboratory building 112 at DTU Lyngby Campus for handling different waste types and conducting research into resource recovery and recycling.
"The ventilation in the old laboratories was not sufficient for all types of experiments, which is why there were sometimes really bad smells. We avoid this completely in the new laboratory building," says Cathrine Tamstorf, Laboratory Manager at DTU Sustain.
A look up at the pilot lab's high ceiling reveals an ingenious system of ducts, pipes, hoses, and cables that ensure optimal ventilation and air quality, so that researchers and students can work safely and efficiently.
