MidCoast Council has taken the next step towards the construction of a new landfill cell at the Taree Waste Management Centre, awarding the construction contract to Synergy Resource Management Pty Ltd.
"Constructing a new landfill cell is always a costly, multi-faceted operation," explained Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell.
"Our historical waste collection data helps inform how we anticipate and plan for new cells but in this instance the urgency for landfill space has been exacerbated by the recent flood event in the Manning catchment, which resulted in additional waste being disposed of at Taree landfill."
The works in the contract include the preparation of an existing quarry, installation of a leachate collection system, preparation of stockpile areas, trimming and grading cell floor and walls, completing a subbase, supplying and installing a liner including all seaming and welding.
"We're expecting work to begin next month and anticipate it will take about eight months to complete."
The multi-million dollar project is funded by Council's waste fund, which is supported by fees at waste management centres.
At the June Council meeting, Councillors were presented with the outcome of the public tender process for the construction of the landfill cell.
A tender evaluation panel was formed to assess the applicants and consisted of Council project delivery and waste management staff.
Synergy provided examples of similar landfill cell projects they had completed or are currently undertaking and it was this extensive experience that stood out for Council's evaluation panel.
