New Leaders Named for Health, DJSIR Departments

VIC Premier

The Victorian Government has today appointed two new departmental secretaries with Matt Carrick to lead the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions (DJSIR) and Jenny Atta PSM to lead the Department of Health (DH).

Both Matt and Jenny are highly regarded and bring enormous experience as leaders of the public sector.

Jenny has been the Secretary of the Department of Education for the past six years and was a deputy in the department before that. Jenny has previously held senior roles in the Department of Treasury and Finance and the former Department of Human Services. Jenny is also a Victorian Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration.

Matt has been the Chief Executive Officer of V/Line since 2021. He was previously the CEO of State Trustees Limited and has also worked in Deputy Secretary roles in Investment & Economic Projects, Investment & Trade, State Development and also as Executive Director of Invest Victoria.

These appointments follow the departure of Prof Euan Wallace AM as Secretary of DH and Tim Ada as the Secretary of DJSIR, which were announced today.

Prof Wallace started in the role in November 2020 and led the department through the COVID-19 pandemic response and recovery.

Prior to his appointment as Secretary, from 2017-20 Mr Wallace was the inaugural CEO of Safer Care Victoria, and before that an academic clinician and health system leader.

Prof Wallace is widely respected in the health sector and brought significant experience across public administration, healthcare governance and clinical improvement.

Tim joined DJSIR from the Department of Premier and Cabinet, where he was Deputy Secretary, Economic Policy and State Productivity. In this role, he has made an important contribution to the state's economic development, innovation and infrastructure agenda.

He also led DJSIR through significant change and reorganisation post COVID-19, including the integration of the TAFE and skills portfolio.

Mr Ada and Prof Wallace will both finish their roles on 28 February.

As stated by Premier Jacinta Allan

"I congratulate Jenny and Matt on their appointments and look forward to their new leadership and expertise driving both DH and DJSIR forward."

"I want to thank Euan and Tim for their professionalism and leadership in achieving a great deal of reform and change in their time and wish them both well for the future."
