Mayne Yard depot's crucial substation at Bowen Hills has been revamped and upgraded, with the multi-million dollar modernised facility now up and running after being commissioned over the four-day Easter weekend.
Queensland Rail Head of South East Queensland Scott Riedel said the project replaced the life expired switchgear with the latest equipment.
"We're committed to providing a modern, reliable railway now and into the future and continue to look for ways to further improve the reliability of rail services for Queenslanders, which is why we have invested $16 million to upgrade this ageing substation," Mr Riedel said.
"For Queensland Rail customers, this means better capability and more reliability for our South East Queensland rail network.
"The upgraded Mayne Yard substation will also support the future of Cross River Rail by connecting into the project's new substation at Breakfast Creek.
"This substation will significantly boost the resilience of the rail network when it comes to unplanned electrical disruptions, allowing faster response and safer operation of services in the event of a power trip caused by unforeseen events like severe storms, debris, or wayward wildlife."
Customers are able to enjoy the unique artwork that ordains the upgraded substation on their daily commute, with it featuring street art depicting the Brisbane skyline by local artist Travis Vinson.
