New Ministerial Youth Advisory Council Members Appointed

  • Ten young people welcomed as new members of Ministerial Youth Advisory Council
  • MYAC provides advice to the Minister for Youth and feedback on State Government policies and initiatives
  • An important opportunity for young people to have a voice

The Cook Government has welcomed new members of the Ministerial Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) who will represent the voice of young West Australians.

Re-established in 2017, MYAC provides an important voice for young people, with members aged 15-to-25 appointed for a two-year term.

MYAC provides advice to the Minister for Youth on topics that matter most to young people, and feedback on State Government policies and initiatives.

New MYAC members are: Alessia Maio (co-chair), Joshua Peckover (co-chair), Amani Kariuki, Henry Bird, Isabella Choate, Joshoa Zilani, Kate Monaghan, Nandini Gera, Om Sharma and Takunda Bere. Lilijana Nicholls is embarking on her second term on the Council.

The representatives are from diverse backgrounds and come from across WA.

MYAC achievements include advocating for stronger support for young people who identify as LGBTQIA+, resulting in the creation of the Youth Pride Network advocacy body.

Earlier this year, MYAC members were consulted on the Cook Government's new three-year Youth Action Plan. Other issues the MYAC has been engaged on include Stronger Together: WA's Plan for Gender Equality and All Paths Lead to a Home: Western Australia's 10-Year Strategy on Homelessness 2020-2030.

As stated by Youth Minister Hannah Beazley:

"I'm pleased to welcome our new and returning members of the Ministerial Youth Advisory Council and look forward to working with them to improve outcomes for young people in Western Australia.

"Young people count for 20 per cent of Western Australia's population, so it's important we hear their perspectives when shaping the future of our State.

"MYAC plays an important role in representing young people across our State so that their views are considered and included during government decision making processes.

"I want to extend a sincere thank you to the departing members of the previous MYAC for all their hard work in helping make Western Australia an even better place for young people."
