New Name Proposed For Southern Road

A new name has been proposed for the streets locals know as the southern distributor road: one of a number of matters decided at last night's (6 August) Council meeting.

NAME: The road around Orange's southern outskirts could be known as Brabham Way if state authorities agree.


♦ In short: Currently known by different names, the plan is to call the southern feeder road 'Brabham Way'.

♦ The road connects the Mitchell Highway with key health and industrial precincts.

♦ What's next: The name change could happen once the current new section is completed.


New name proposed for Southern by-pass: Brabham Way

Last night's meeting proposed to re-name the southern distributor road to be called 'Brabham Way'. At a recent meeting the council decided to name the road 'Southern Distributor Road, but this was rejected by the NSW Geographical Names Board.

The proposed new name will now be forwarded to the board.

It's intended that once the latest section of the road is complete (from Anson to Shirales Rd), other sections which are currently known as Dairy Creek Road and Blowes Road will take on the new name.

Planning matters

Last night's Council meeting decided to:

  • Approve a proposal for a $10.3 million housing development in Shiralee Road which includes 14 detached two-storey houses on compacts lots.
  • Approve a proposal for a new is sought for a new $1.8 million subdivision in Stevenson Way to create 13 urban residential blocks and new road.
  • Approve a proposal for a new subdivision with access to Maramba Road and Sophie Drive
  • Approve a proposal for $5.8 million new 1100 square metre industrial building in Clergate Road including an office and 51 space car park. The building is to be used for engineering design and drafting, steel fabrication and welding, machining and welding, and design, fabrication, installation and maintenance of drills, hoists and crane rigs.
  • Approve a proposal for the construction of a new $1.06 million building in Clergate Road to operate as a depot, landscaping material supplier, and general industrial uses.
  • Approve a proposal for a $2.8 million light industry and a warehouse/distribution centre including 7 units in Cameron Place.
  • Support plans to re-zone are area in Shiralee Road from Low Density Residential to General Residential. The proposal will now be sent to state planning authorities.

Community survey to be published after election

The results of a recent community survey will be published as part of the State of the City report later this year. The report will be presented to the new Council following September's election and released publicly then.

Last night's meeting decided not to support a motion from Cr Steve Peterson who proposed releasing the survey findings in August so they could be considered as part of the upcoming election process.

The survey was conducted by independent consultants in August and September 2023 last year.

  • to donate $2,500 to Two wheel tours for the 2025 Goodness Gravel event on 15 March 2025.
  • to donate $1,000 to the Orange Golf Club for the Duntryleague Women's Open Tournament to be held 28 to 30 October 2024.
  • to donate $10,000 to Orange Field Days for the Australian National Field Days to be held 24 to 26 October 2024.
  • to donate $3,000 to Regional Development Australia for the Central West Inspired Women Gala Event to be held 29 November 2024.
  • to donate $3,000 to Badlands Brewery Pty Ltd for the Backroads - Brews and Blues Festival to be held 26 to 27 October 2024.
  • to donate $10,000 to the Orange Regional Vignerons Association for the Orange Wine Show hire costs and for the Orange Wine Festival held 18 October to 3 November 2024.

Last night's meeting decided to support a number of local organisations. The meeting decided to

  • to donate $2,500 to Orange Woodworkers Association Inc to contribute to the costs of purchasing ducting for the dust extraction system.
  • to donate $500 to the City of Orange Eisteddfod Society Inc to contribute to a Senior Piano Scholarship for competitors aged 13-18 years.
  • to donate $2,500 to Country Education Foundation of Orange and District Inc to contribute to the costs of supporting 2 to 3 Orange school leavers' transition to post education, in the form of grants between $500 and $3,500.
  • to donate $411 to Am I Next to cover the hire cost for the Showground and Naylor Pavilion for their event, which highlights domestic and family-based violence in central west NSW.

New sister city proposed

A proposal for a new Sister City will be explored following a decision by last night's meeting A motion from Cr Jeff Whitton asked for the Sister City Community Committee to consider commencing a Sister City Relationship with Patna, Bihar India.

Cr Whitton told the meeting he had recently visited India at the invitation of the Indian Minister for Food Processing. The Minister is keen to further strengthen trade relationships with Australia, and especially in regional areas. The Minister's home state is Bihar, home city Patna

  • Fishing will be allowed at the Spring Creek Dam following a decision at last night's meeting. The meeting adopted a new management plan for the dam which has recently been on display for community comment.
  • Last night's meeting heard long-running efforts are continuing to establish a new Friendship City relationship with a city in Ukraine.
  • The Think Orange gift card, an initiative to encourage local shopping has come to an end. Last night's meeting adopted a recommendation from the Employment & Economic Development committee not to renew the gift car system
  • The meeting adopted a new Urban Forest Strategy, which has recently been on exhibition for community comment. The strategic approach of this document is aimed at ensuring future tree planting is focussed where needed most, often in low socio-economic areas, where shade is important for pedestrians along active transport routes.
