New Norfolk's brand-new state-of-the-art police station was officially opened today, giving our police officers and the community a modern and fit-for-purpose facility to be proud of.
This $5-million project involved the demolition and complete re-build of the old station, which had stood on Bathurst Street since the late 1960s.
As well as giving our police officers a state-of-the-art facility to work from, the new station provides more space to accommodate the growing number of police officers allocated to the Derwent Valley area.
Under this Government, New Norfolk has received an additional 5 police officers since 2014, taking the current allocation to 14 police officers.
Remote and country area policing has such an important role in our State, and this new Station will help to ensure that local policing services continue to be first class, now and into the future.
The station will also serve as a central space for the New Norfolk township, with a 3D artwork to be installed in front of the existing sycamore tree at the site, as part of the Tasmanian Government's Art Site Scheme.
This will help ensure the station is a positive addition to the New Norfolk streetscape for many years to come.
Hansen Yuncken were awarded the contract to construct the new station, following design work by HBV Architects.
The Tasmanian Government has been rebuilding police numbers since coming to Government, by recruiting 308 additional police officers, which is a 30 per cent increase to ensure that Tasmanians continue to remain safe.
