New Police Cars For Crime Crackdown

NT Government

Northern Territory Police have been provided with a new fleet of high powered vehicles as the Lawler Labor Government continues to deliver its common sense plan to crackdown on crime.

Joining the front line, the first of the new Subaru WRX patrol cars will be on the streets of Darwin within weeks before the entire fleet of 13 are rolled out Territory wide.

Designed by operational Police, the new fit-for-purpose patrol cars are fitted with features to make Police's job swifter and safer including emergency lighting, a dual battery system, rifle mount with electronic release, automatic number plate recognition, advanced speed radar, and a light bar with a messaging board - bringing the total cost of each vehicle to $70,000.

The Subaru WRX's will be replacing the aging fleet of Kia Stingers and VW Passat's and take the total vehicles in the Traffic Police Unit to 29.

This latest edition to police resources can reach speeds of up to 250 kilometres per hour and will expand the operational capabilities of the Traffic Policing unit, ensuring our front line are as efficient and effective as possible.

Also hitting the beat this week are 14 new constables graduating from the Police College, bringing the total number of new constables to graduate from the college in the past month to 77.

This new fleet of state-of-the-art police vehicles and yet another graduating class of constables are a reflection of the Lawler Governments commitment to lowering crime through an extra $570 million to bolster resources and get 200 more officers on our streets.
