Tasmania Police's brand-new patrol vessel, the PV Van Diemen, was unveiled in Hobart today, marking the start of a new era for Tasmania Police's Marine and Rescue Services.
The state-of-the-art, $13.4 million vessel represents the Tasmanian Government's significant investment in the safety and security of Tasmania's coastal waters.
This is the third and final vessel to be delivered under the Large Vessel Replacement Program, following the successful construction and commissioning of the $8.6 million PV Cape Wickham and the $3.6 million PV Dauntless.
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis, said the new vessel is more than just a replacement; it's a major upgrade that will serve Tasmania Police and our community for years to come.
"With impressive speeds and world-class capabilities, Tasmania Police are in a better position than ever to protect our coastline and ensure the safety of our waters," Minister Ellis said.
"Investments like the Van Diemen sends a clear message to those who feel they can do the wrong thing around our coastline – you will be caught.
"This vessel is a testament to our commitment to providing Tasmania Police with the best tools and resources to protect our community and our marine environment.
"Through our Government's 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we're backing in our police to keep our communities safe."
Tasmania Police are currently undertaking final acceptance testing and training and will welcome the new vessel to the Tasmania Police fleet next month.
