The Lawler Labor Government is investing $1.5 million for a new renal facility in Wadeye.
A tender was released today for a standalone renal clinic located at the existing Wadeye Community Health Centre site.
The new renal clinic will include four renal chairs, an accessible toilet and a nurse's station.
The facility will provide residents from the West Daly Region living with kidney disease greater access to nurse assisted renal services in their community.
Construction is expected to commence in October 2024, with completion anticipated in 2025.
This comes after a new renal unit was launched in Minyerri last month to provide care closer to home for residents who require dialysis.
There are more than 400 patients receiving renal replacement therapy in the Top End, Big Rivers and East Arnhem regions.
The Territory has the highest proportion of population receiving dialysis in Australia, at a rate four times higher than the national average. Sadly, Aboriginal Territorians face a higher risk of developing kidney disease compared to non-Aboriginal Territorians.
The Lawler Labor Government is prioritising increasing care closer to home and access to more treatment choices for Territorians living with kidney disease in line with the new NT Health Kidney Plan 2024 - 2029.
Attributable to Minister for Health Selena Uibo:
"Our Lawler Government is improving care closer to home right across the Territory.
"Our new Kidney strategy aims at improving renal services to offer access to more treatment choices for Territorians."
Attributable to Member for Daly Dheran Young:
"This is exciting news for residents of Wadeye and surrounding communities, as I know there are people eager to see care closer to home.
"Having a renal clinic in Wadeye will mean less travel, and that residents who need to undertake dialysis can go home on the same day."
