New Rental Laws Aim to Ease Homelessness Crisis

Homelessness NSW

Homelessness NSW has welcomed the passage of rental reforms which will end no-grounds evictions.

"These important changes will help ease the homelessness crisis across our state," said Homelessness NSW CEO Dominique Rowe.

"One of the main causes of homelessness is eviction from private rentals, so anything we can do to reduce evictions will keep people in housing and take pressure off our homelessness services."

We are currently experiencing a housing and homelessness crisis across the state with:

  • A record 2,037 people sleeping rough recorded this year

  • 58,000 people waiting for social housing, with waitlists up to five years long in some areas

  • More than 68,000 people per year asking for help from homelessness services - and many more not seeking help at all
