New Report: Women's Share in European Film Industry

CoE/European Audiovisual Observatory

The proportion of women working in the various different roles in European film production only grew from 19% in 2015 to 24% in 2023. Between 2019 and 2023, the proportion of women in the cinema industry represented around 30% for producers, editors, screenwriters and directors, and only 12% for cinematographers and 10% for composers.

These are the findings of a new report by the European Audiovisual Observatory, part of the Council of Europe. This report covers EU27, Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, North Macedonia, the Republic of Moldova, Norway, Switzerland, Türkiye and the United Kingdom.

The report concludes that these continuing low proportions are due to several identifiable factors. Firstly the proportion of women currently working as part of the active cinema industry workforce remains low. In addition, women working in cinema tend to get fewer job assignments than their male counterparts in all fields except for editing.
