A new bridge on the Tasman Highway has been completed at Sheas Creek, improving access to Orford and the East Coast for freight vehicles, the local community and visitors.
The project was funded on an 80:20 basis under the Australian and Tasmanian governments through the joint $10 million State Road Network Enhancements initiative – part of a national program delivering shovel-ready projects to drive our economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Barnaby Joyce, said the new bridge will reduce maintenance costs.
"The new Sheas Creek Bridge is designed to cater for expected developments in the freight industry well into the future," the Deputy Prime Minister said.
"Providing a high standard of transport infrastructure is vital in ensuring the efficient movement of goods to support Tasmania's economic growth."
Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson, said the design and re-alignment of the road through the new bridge and new road barriers will improve safety for road users.
"The previous bridge at Sheas Creek was built in 1940 and was nearing its capacity to handle the heavier vehicles used in modern freight transport," Mr Ferguson said.
"The project supports the Tasmanian Government's efforts to improve the visitor experience for people touring the popular east coast by providing safe and convenient road infrastructure."
Senator for Tasmania, Claire Chandler, said the new bridge would provide long-term benefits for the east coast.
"It's essential that Tasmania's road network is safe and accessible for all users, and the new bridge ensures this vital transport link will continue to serve the many communities along the east coast," Senator Chandler said.
"The delivery and completion of the Sheas Creek Bridge is a testament to the strong working relationship between the Federal Coalition and Tasmanian Governments, which is delivering better outcomes for Tasmanians."
Ulverstone-based company VEC Civil Engineering Construction built the bridge, providing jobs for Tasmanians and benefits for the local economy.
