Drivers are being reminded Every K Counts when driving through Wentworth Shire towns this holiday season.
Local Illustrator and Graphic Designer Gary Davis has worked with Coomealla High School Arts students on a collaborative illustration for Council's tourism signage at the entry to the Shire at Gol Gol, Curlwaa and Wentworth.
The new campaign to target speeding was developed locally by the Local Government Road Safety Program, jointly funded by Wentworth Shire Council and Transport for NSW.
Police are targeting speed during the campaign to enforce the message "Every K counts!" with double demerit point operations over the festive season.
Australia Day will also occur during the campaign period.
Council's Asset Department have monitored speed in the areas using traffic counter tubes to measure the speed of traffic by vehicle type, time of day, day of week and direction of travel.
This monitoring will be conducted during the campaign as well to measure the impact of the project.
An official event will be held with the student artists to celebrate their work early in first term 2022.
Driving too fast is the single biggest contributor to death and injury on NSW roads.
Speeding consistently contributes to around 41 per cent of road fatalities and 24 per cent of serious injuries each year.
This means almost 150 lives are lost and 1,270 people are seriously injured each year.
Over the five years from 2015 to 2019, 743 people were killed and 6,372 were seriously injured in speed-related crashes in NSW.
