Residents have started moving into hundreds of new homes in Brighton that have been delivered as part of the Allan Labor Government's innovative Ground Lease Model.
Minister for Housing Harriet Shing today visited the New St development with Member for Southern Metropolitan Ryan Batchelor, to inspect the 151 new social housing homes which are the latest homes delivered as part of the Ground Lease Model to start welcoming residents.
Under the model, Homes Victoria in partnership with Housing Australia have leased the land to project partner, Building Communities (Vic) Limited to build, manage and maintain the housing for 40 years.
This unique partnership model - a first for social housing development in Australia - ensures all land to remain in public ownership.
The New Street site features 151 new social housing homes, an increase of 19 percent at the site. In addition, there are 140 market rental homes, growing the supply of rental homes in Brighton.
There is also a new cafe, community pavilion, and community garden available for use by residents and the local community.
The homes are modern, accessible and energy efficient, and are located close to public transport, jobs, community services and local destinations including Elsternwick Park, Elwood Beach and Glen Huntly Road.
Ground Lease Model sites in Flemington and Prahran have also been completed and an additional development at Holland Court, Flemington was announced last year to deliver more than 1,000 new homes by late 2026.
Further Ground Lease Model projects were announced late last year, with planning underway at Hampton East, Prahran, Port Melbourne and South Yarra.
As stated by Minister for Housing Harriet Shing
"The innovative Ground Lease Model is one of the many ways we are delivering social housing, providing modern and accessible homes for those who need them most."
"We are getting on with building more social and affordable homes in areas where Victorians need them most - revitalising communities to make them even better places to live, work and play."
As stated by Federal Minister for Housing Julie Collins
"The Albanese Labor Government is working closely with our state colleagues, and today's announcement is an example of how Australians benefit from these collaborative efforts.
"This is exactly what the Albanese Labor Government will achieve through our new historic investments in housing, including the $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund and $2 billion Social Housing Accelerator.
As stated by Member for Southern Metropolitan Ryan Batchelor
"Everyone has the right to a safe and secure home, and that's exactly what we're providing right here in Brighton."
As stated by Senator for Victoria Jana Stewart
"Projects like this one are made possible thanks to significant investments in social housing from the Albanese Labor Government and the Victorian State Government. When we work together, Victorians are better off."
