The Andrews Labor Government is boosting safety for drivers and pedestrians in the heart of Casterton.

Minister for Roads Jaala Pulford today announced a new 40km/h speed limit would be introduced on the Glenelg Highway in the main shopping strip of Casterton.

As a key freight route, the Glenelg Highway carries about 2600 vehicles a day with heavy vehicles making up 25 per cent of total traffic.

Both the Casterton community and the local heavy vehicle industry have raised concerns about safety in the main shopping strip, particularly with pedestrians crossing the highway and vehicles attempting to reverse out of angled parking.

At a community meeting earlier this year, there was support for a lower speed limit to improve safety and to help reduce the noise of heavy vehicles travelling through the town.

The speed reduction comes following community feedback and a comprehensive speed limit review by Regional Roads Victoria (RRV).

At a community meeting earlier this year, there was support for a lower speed limit to improve safety and to help reduce the noise of heavy vehicles travelling through the town.

A lower and safer speed limit in the CBD is also supported by Glenelg Shire Council and Victoria Police.

To improve safety the current 50km/h speed limit will be lowered to 40km/h. New signage will be rolled out in coming weeks, with the new limit to come into immediate effect upon completion.

As noted by Minister for Roads, Road Safety and the TAC Jaala Pulford

"We've listened to the community and the advice of experts - that's why we're taking action to boost safety in Casterton by introducing a new 40km/h speed limit."

"This new limit will not only help protect pedestrians, our most vulnerable road users, and boost safety for drivers visiting and travelling through the shopping strip."
