Local football clubs will soon be able to play longer at Coledale's St James Park with the installation of new sports field lighting.
On Monday 31 May, Council accepted a tender for the installation of new LED lighting towers at the popular football pitch, as Council continues its ongoing commitment to improving sporting facilities across Wollongong.
"It's no secret our city loves sport. Our sports grounds are continuously being used all year-round supporting teams of all ages, sporting codes and skill levels," Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.
"It's important for Council to meet the increasing demand for quality facilities, as we recognise that these play a key role in driving community participation and sustainability."
Council's Sports Ground and Sporting Facilities Strategy (2017-2021) identifies sportsfield lighting as a key priority as there is an increasing demand for training and competition use from our local sporting clubs.
"We're committed to improving and maintaining facilities at these sites with upgrades such as sports field lighting which will increase the time our sporting clubs can safely use these facilities," Cr Bradbery said.
"As we continue to upgrade and maintain our sport facilities, our community members can continue to play the game they love with lighting of the most efficiency, both energy usage and light quality."
Works on site are expected to start in July and are due to be completed by October depending on weather and other conditions.
