A brand-new street sweeper has been added to Benalla Rural City Council's fleet to improve service delivery across the municipality.

The Council purchased the new street sweeper under its plant replacement and renewal program, after 'Sweepy Jean' was put into retirement.

Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn said the new street sweeper had already been in action.

"The new sweeper travels faster between jobs and is capable of cleaning roads, kerbs and intersections," Cr Hearn said. It has a suction hose that allows further reach and is more efficient in areas with obstructions".

"With the addition of this sweeper, our staff are able to carry out more frequent services throughout the Benalla Rural City, in particular to urban and rural areas," Cr Hearn said.

Cr Hearn said the machine had already improved service delivery.

"With an increased capacity of 4 tonnes, the street sweeper collects leaves, litter and branches from entering the underground drainage system potentially causing blockages, subsequent flooding and damaging the environment," Cr Hearn said.

The sweeper also unloads collected debris directly into the Landfill, improving efficiencies and operational productivity.

"This new street sweeper will enable us to service a greater area and improve efficiencies, keeping the Benalla Rural City clean," Cr Hearn said.

"We know that one of the key features local residents value most about living in Benalla Rural City is our beautiful natural surrounds and close connection to the environment, so we have a deep appreciation of our role in preserving this environment for future generations to enjoy," Cr Hearn said.
