New Uni High School Campus Gives Students Room To Grow

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government is helping more students get a great education in inner Melbourne by establishing a new campus in for University High School.

The Labor Government, in consultation with the University High School's school leadership and School Council, will establish a temporary campus at 399 Lonsdale Street from next year under a seven-year lease agreement to meet increasing enrolment.

Formerly an education facility, the Lonsdale Street site will provide capacity for up to 400 students in a close-by CBD location. The campus will be used by year nine students from the first day of term 1, 2025 and will allow students to continue receiving quality education in a safe and fit for purpose environment.

All Year 9 students will be located at the new campus. This will provide an opportunity to develop an outstanding, standalone city based educational experience for University High students. The move also frees space at North Melbourne Primary School, where the students are currently based.

The 399 Lonsdale Street site is currently used as a young adult education facility and hosts various learning spaces.

These learning spaces will be adapted to suit the needs of the re-developed Year Nine program. General purpose classrooms, as well as multi-purpose practical learning spaces, will be filled with natural light through floor to ceiling windows with city views.

The new campus was selected to maximise recreational and learning spaces for all students and to minimise disruptions to school operations.

The Department of Education is continuing to explore longer-term options for additional secondary school facilities in the Parkville, Flemington, North Melbourne and Arden areas to help manage increased enrolments at University High School.

Since coming into government, the Labor Government has funded $16.9 billion to build, upgrade and maintain school infrastructure across Victoria.

As stated by Minister for Education Ben Carroll

"Melbourne is now the biggest city in Australia and we're delivering 100 new schools and expanding many others to meet increasing enrolment in the Education State"

"The new University High campus will make sure this excellent school can continue to accommodate families and students in its zone."
