The Allan Labor Government has today announced the appointment of Joe Calafiore as the Chief Executive Officer of WorkSafe Victoria.
Mr Calafiore has a wealth of experience that equips him to WorkSafe's ongoing modernisation, having served as the interim CEO of WorkSafe since October 2023. His appointment follows an open and competitive recruitment process.
Prior to his time at WorkSafe, Mr Calafiore was the CEO of the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) from 2015 to 2023, before which he held senior roles in TAC's Community and Corporate Affairs divisions.
These roles have provided Mr Calafiore with extensive experience leading statutory insurance schemes and a strong record of strengthening organisational capability and financial sustainability.
Mr Calafiore is appointed at a key time for WorkSafe as the Allan Labor Government bans engineered stone from July this year, protecting workers from deadly silicosis.
He will lead WorkSafe as the Government modernises the WorkCover scheme, giving security to workers and businesses who use it and making sure the system is sustainable for years to come.
Mr Calafiore takes over the position from former CEO Colin Radford, who led WorkSafe for nearly four years.
Appointed to the role in November 2019, Mr Radford played a key role encouraging employers to take a prevention-led approach to mental health injuries. He laid the foundations for the ongoing reforms to the WorkSafe scheme and led the organisation through the COVID-19 pandemic.
As stated by Minister for WorkSafe and the TAC Danny Pearson
"I congratulate Joe Calafiore on his appointment as WorkSafe's Chief Executive Officer, and thank Colin Radford for his leadership of WorkSafe through the pandemic."
"Every worker deserves to come home safe from work - Mr Calafiore will lead WorkSafe as it continues to reduce workplace harm and improve outcomes for injured workers."
"Mr Calafiore's experience will be key to implementing our WorkCover reforms, delivering a scheme that supports Victorian workers when they need it most and helps them return to work."
