New Year Honours 18 January

Members of the University community including staff, alumni and honorary fellows have been recognised for their outstanding achievements in the King's New Year Honours 2025.

Professor Susan Wong of the School of Medicine becomes a CBE for her work into diabetes and metabolism. Her research has shed light on why people develop diabetes, working on different aspects of the immune system, and she has supported development of pre-clinical and clinical studies of immunotherapy for Type 1 diabetes. In addition to research, she has extensive experience in clinical care for people living with diabetes, education of students and health care professionals and working with the diabetes charities.

Professor Nicholas Jenkins of the School of Engineering becomes a OBE for services to renewable energy and to smart grid technologies. He has undertaken teaching and research in electrical power engineering and renewable energy, and was a member of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Panel of Technical Experts, providing advice to government on the Capacity Mechanism.

Also recognised are alumni including Ruth Marks who becomes CBE for services to the voluntary sector and to social partnership in Wales, and Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz who is awarded a GBE for services to cancer research, clinical research, medicine and charities.

Honorary Fellows receiving awards include Sir Stephen Fry who becomes a Knight Bachelor for services to mental health awareness, the environment and charity, and Sir Gerald Davies who is also awarded a Knight Bachelor for services to Rugby Union and to voluntary and charitable service in Wales.
