New Year's Eve celebrations across Western Australia saw thousands of people enjoy local events in their communities, as they said goodbye to 2024 and welcomed in 2025.
While the vast majority of people attending those events acted responsibly, there were a small number of people who were arrested, mainly due to alcohol-related incidents and anti-social behaviour.
While crowds were generally happy and well behaved, police were kept busy with 121 people arrested, and a further 86 people to be dealt with by summons for a total of 260 charges, a reduction on the 126 arrests and 290 charges seen last year.
During the New Year's Eve police operation 835 edged weapon scans were conducted, resulting in less than 10 edged weapons being seized, and 234 Move on Notices were issued, providing effective tactics for police to use to keep New Year's Eve revellers safe in entertainment precincts and at community events.
A WA Police Force spokesperson said the annual increased deployment of police officers on patrol during New Year's Eve celebrations helps keep the community safe.
"Our deployments to entertainment precincts and community events provided a visual deterrence to those people who were out there to cause trouble, and allowed us to respond quickly to incidents that required police attention.
"Last night's celebrations were supported by many local volunteer groups and emergency first responders, who did an amazing job to be there for people who needed them.
"Thousands of people attended planned celebrations at the popular entertainment precincts of Perth, Rockingham, Mandurah, Hillarys, Scarborough and Fremantle, and we thank everyone who attended those events and who had a great time while respecting each other."
