New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai (NYEE) has announced the opening of the Center for Refractive Solutions—the first in New York City and one of few in the United States—that offers comprehensive and innovative treatment options for those who require refractive correction. This includes premium cataract and intraocular lens surgery, and corneal refractive procedures such as LASIK, to reduce patients' dependency on glasses and contact lenses.
The newly renovated space, located at 310 East 14th Street in Lower Manhattan, is solely dedicated to patients interested in cataract or corneal refractive procedures and offers streamlined, comprehensive care in a single location.
"We're now able to offer our patients more complete and efficient access to premium services, including intraocular lens implants, laser-assisted cataract surgery, and custom LASIK," says Kira Manusis, MD, Director of the Center for Refractive Solutions and Co-Director of Cataract Services at NYEE. The Center houses state-of-the-art corneal and ocular imaging, where ophthalmic specialists can image and map multiple layers of the cornea and precisely measure the dimensions of the eye. This allows experts to thoroughly design surgical plans tailored to each patient's lifestyle and ophthalmic needs.
At the Center for Refractive Solutions, surgeons offer a variety of cataract surgical options for patients, depending on a number of factors, including eye health, daily hobbies, and visual needs. A precise and customized plan is created for each patient using the most advanced lens technology. These advancements lead to the best quality of vision with the least dependence on glasses.
Surgeons also perform a variety of minimally invasive refractive procedures to correct visual issues such as having trouble seeing in the distance or close-up, and blurry vision. These surgeries provide improved vision without glasses or contact lenses.
Options include:
- LASIK and Wavefront LASIK (custom LASIK) Uses specialized laser technology to reshape the cornea. Wavefront LASIK creates a personalized 3D map of the eye to enhance accuracy of the surgery and gives patients a more customized treatment for improved results.
- Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK ) A laser surgery to improve vision and to reduce—sometimes eliminate—the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses. PRK can treat both nearsightedness and farsightedness with or without astigmatism (blurry or distorted vision) and is an option for those who don't qualify for LASIK.
- EVO ICL™ (Implantable Collamer Lens ) An implantable lens that corrects vision without the need to remove any corneal tissue (as during LASIK or PRK) or replace the eye's natural lens. Instead, surgeons make a small incision in the eye to place a permanent, implantable contact lens, the ICL, on top of the existing lens. This procedure is fully reversible. EVO ICL treats common vision issues such as nearsightedness and astigmatism, but also extreme nearsightedness that is out of range for laser vision correction treatment. It also enhances day and night vision without the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses.
- Refractive lens exchange (RLE) Also known as custom lens replacement, helps patients over 40 who are experiencing vision changes from aging so they no longer have to wear glasses or contact lenses. RLE surgery replaces the natural lens of the eye with an artificial lens that permanently corrects vision, both near and far. As a result, the eyes will not only see better, but will not develop cataracts or need cataract surgery with age.
