Next-Gen 3D Laser Scanner for Large Surfaces Unveiled

Hexagon's Manufacturing Intelligence division has launched a new 3D laser scanner, the Absolute Scanner AS1-XL, designed for large surface inspection and applicable with both its laser tracker and portable measuring arm devices. The innovative scanner, built on Hexagon's proprietary SHINE technology, can efficiently collect high-definition 3D data from challenging surfaces at impressive speeds.

The AS1-XL is primarily designed for inspecting sizable surfaces and deep cavities in sectors such as automotive, marine, and aerospace. Featuring a 600-millimetre ultra-wide scan line at mid-range, 1.2 million points per second point acquisition rate, and a 300 Hertz frame rate, the AS1-XL can scan large surfaces swiftly without compromising inspection detail.

A notable feature of this scanner is its extended measurement stand-off distance of 700 millimetres, enabling hidden point measurement capability of up to a metre, paired with a 600-millimetre working range. This feature makes it suitable for tasks requiring a high level of detail while scanning large areas.

Hexagon's SHINE technology and automation compatibility set the AS1-XL apart from the handheld-only device of the previous generation, the LAS-XL. This technology ensures the digitization of almost any material, including various surface types and color finishes, within a single scan pass. This eliminates the need for manual settings adjustment.

Daniel Moser, Laser Tracker Product Director at Hexagon, stated, "With the AS1-XL, we've been able to deliver on the promise of that large surface measurement concept in a far more satisfying way thanks to our new scanning technology that is ten times faster than our previous generation, the LAS-XL."

The AS1-XL scanner is designed for compatibility with both Hexagon's flagship laser tracker and portable measuring arm systems – the Leica Absolute Tracker AT960 and Absolute Arm 7-Axis respectively. Users can switch between detailed scanning and larger surface inspection using either a portable arm or laser tracker with minimum warm-up period, offering flexibility in inspection tasks.

Hexagon (Nasdaq Stockholm: HEXA B) has approximately 24,000 employees in 50 countries and net sales of approximately 5.2bn EUR.
