Construction is now underway on the $411 million third stage of the St George Hospital Redevelopment, which will enhance the delivery of health care to the St George and Sutherland communities.
Premier Chris Minns, Minister for Health Ryan Park and Member for Rockdale Steve Kamper joined health workers at the site of the new Integrated Ambulatory Care Precinct for a traditional sod turn event to mark the important milestone. The $411 million Integrated Ambulatory Care Precinct would bring new and existing health services together under the one roof.
Stage 3 of the St George Hospital redevelopment will include:
- Outpatient, ambulatory and integrated care services
- Pathology specimen collection
- New day rehabilitation unit
- Increased sub-acute and rehabilitation inpatient beds
- Sub-acute aged care unit
- Behavioural management unit
- Acquired brain injury unit
- Palliative care
- Surgical services with refurbished operating theatres
- Enhanced diagnostic imaging (medical imaging and nuclear medicine)
- New Clinical Skills Centre.
Contractor BESIX Watpac has been appointed to deliver the project which also includes new parking off Kensington Street. The Integrated Ambulatory Care Precinct is located on the Kensington Street side of the St George Hospital campus. Main works are expected to be completed in late 2025, with further refurbishment, demolition and landscaping works targeted for completion in late 2026. The Stage 3 Redevelopment will complement the previously completed Emergency Department, eight-level Acute Services Building and upgraded Birth Unit and Operating Theatre redevelopment, bringing the total investment for the St George Hospital to $740 million.
St George Hospital is one of the busiest trauma hospitals in Sydney, with 20,811 attendances to the emergency department in the first quarter of 2023. The NSW Labor Government recognises the challenges facing busy hospitals such as St George Hospital and has outlined an ambitious and comprehensive suite of measures to rebuild our health and hospital system. These include boosting our nurses workforce to safe staffing levels and our rural and regional paramedics.
The Minns Government is also improving and optimising health spending through Special Commission of Inquiry and working to improve surgical wait times through the Surgical Care Governance Taskforce. The Minns NSW Government has also committed to building the Rouse Hill Hospital and upgrading Canterbury, Fairfield, Mount Druitt and Blacktown Hospitals.
