Niki Savva Chosen To Deliver Speaker's Lecture 2024

Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Honourable Milton Dick MP has chosen distinguished political journalist Ms Niki Savva to deliver the third Speaker's Lecture at Parliament House on 9 September 2024.

Ms Savva's lecture - Survival in the age of mistrust, challenges for politicians and journalists – will explore how trust in politics is being eroded by culture wars, how feelings rather than facts are creating battlelines amongst groups of voters, and how it is effecting the way politics is perceived in Australia.

Ms Savva is an award-winning journalist, author and political commentator. Her extraordinary career spans over five decades, where she has worked for The Australian, the Herald Sun and the Age as a Correspondent and Bureau Chief.

In 2016, she received a lifetime achievement award from the Melbourne Press Club for her outstanding coverage of Australian politics as a reporter, columnist and author.

"I was delighted when Ms Savva accepted my invitation to deliver this year's lecture," The Speaker said.

"The Australian media play a very important role in Australian democracy, and this lecture series provides them the platform to share their unique perspectives."

"Ms Savva is one of the nations' most respected journalists and I am really looking forward to her critical insights and observations she has gathered across her extensive and decorated career in the Australian media."

Ms Savva will be introduced by the Speaker and the Clerk of the House of Representatives, Claressa Surtees.

A Q&A session will be held after Niki's speech, with light refreshments.

To attend in-person – entry is free, registration for the event is essential. Please register via the online form. It will also be broadcast live on the APH website.
