Moira Shire's youngest water enthusiasts are being encouraged to register for a summer program designed to teach vital swimming skills.

The Bush Nippers program returns to Cobram-Barooga for the third year in January and is a part of a collaboration between Lifesaving Victoria, Moira Shire Council and Barooga Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

It is specifically tailored to regional inland waterways like in Moira Shire and is designed to improve lifesaving skills and water safety knowledge for children aged 5 to 13.

It focuses on building skills like open water swimming, developing specific river environment knowledge, and lifesaving, rescue and survival strategies through fun activities and games.

Registrations are now open, just in time for people looking for last minute Christmas gift ideas.

Moira Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Matthew Morgan said programs like Bush Nippers were key for regional young people to safely enjoy local waterways.

'We're lucky to have beautiful waterways like the Murray River in our region, but they can present dangers like strong currents and submerged objects if people aren't familiar with that location, especially young children," Mr Morgan said.

"Bush Nippers is a great program to help children learn essential water safety skills and gain confidence in a safe environment."

Bush Nippers will run over a two-week period at Thompsons Beach from January 14-16 and January 21-23.
