However, the Coalition has promised to make a decision on the North West Shelf gas project expansion within 30 days of taking office.
This has nothing to do with the domestic supply of gas and there is no need at all for more gas.
Australia Institute research shows:
- 80 per cent of Australia's gas is exported
- Gas exports have tripled Australian gas and electricity prices
- Australia collects more revenue from HECS than the Petroleum Resources Rent Tax
- Nurses pay more tax than oil and gas companies
"The North West Shelf gas extension is a project to export yet more gas," said Rod Campbell, Research Director at The Australia Institute.
"The North West Shelf does nothing to solve Australia's actual gas problems - demand management, pipeline constraints and storage in southern states.
"What it will do is add the equivalent of 12 new coal-fired power stations worth of emissions over the next 50 years.
"The Coalition acknowledges that unrestrained gas exports are damaging Australia. Independent senators like David Pocock and Jacquie Lambie and Pauline Hanson agree, as do the Greens.
"It seems that only the Labor Government are blind to the problems created by Australia's excessive gas exports."
