Nominations Open for Council's Sporting Walk of Fame

We know that there's plenty of sporting talent and prowess in Baw Baw Shire, but we want everybody else to know as well!

Nominations are now open for new athletes to be considered for induction into the Baw Baw Shire Sporting Walk of Fame at Civic Park in Warragul; a celebration of talented sportspeople and a prestigious recognition of sporting excellence and achievement.

The Sporting Walk of Fame was created not only as a tribute to local sporting champions, but also to turn the 2000 Sydney Olympic Torch relay stop in the region, into an even more significant event. On 9 August 2000, Council formally launched the Sporting Walk of Fame with the induction of five local athletes.

Nominations are now open until Sunday 11 August and community members are encouraged to read the nomination guidelines and then share their submissions by completing a form on Baw Baw Connect.

Baw Baw Shire Mayor Cr Annemarie McCabe said that this commemorative trail was a place of pride in the Shire and showcased some of the best sporting talent in the region.

"We currently have 24 athletes from Baw Baw Shire recognised on the Sporting Walk of Fame and I am really looking forward to seeing more sportspeople recognised," Cr McCabe said.

"Like many others, I can't wait to tune into the Paris Olympics and I can't think of a better time to revisit the walk of fame, and acknowledge more of our local sporting talent."

A full list of the inductees is available on Council's website, however some of the names include Kathy Watt for her achievements in cycling, Gary Ayers for his AFL career, local boxing champion Lionel Rose, and speed roller skater, Marisa Yeaman.

The last round of inductees were added to the Sporting Walk of Fame in 2022.

Following this process, nominations will be presented to Council's Place Names Advisory Committee, and also at a future Council meeting where Councillors will consider nominee recommendations.
