Want to have a say in which community members are recognised for their contribution to life in Wollongong?
There is still time to nominate for one of four community representative spots on the City of Wollongong Awards Committee, with the nomination period open until 9 October.
The community representatives provide valuable and essential input into the Committee's running and judging of the annual City of Wollongong Awards that acknowledge the people and organisations who make Wollongong a better place.
Successful nominees sit alongside the Lord Mayor, an additional Wollongong Councillor, and the Citizen, Senior Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year. The Multicultural Communities Council of Illawarra also has a seat on the Committee, which also includes one representative from either the Aboriginal Reference Group or the Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council.
The four community representatives will represent diverse backgrounds, interests and community involvement, with wide and varied experience to bring valuable perspective to both the categories included in each year's program, and the subsequent judging of the awards.
Community members sit on the 11-member committee for a period of two years, with meetings held on a monthly basis in order to provide advice and support and feedback to Council regarding the Awards and judging criteria.
Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Tania Brown encouraged anyone with an interest in shaping the way individuals and community groups are honoured for their contribution to nominate for a place on the Committee.
"Wollongong is a wonderfully diverse community made up of people from many varying backgrounds and interests," Cr Brown said.
"It's important the annual awards recognising those who make such huge contributions to life in our great city reflect that diversity of culture and experience.
"If you'd like to have a say in honouring the many great contributors to life in Wollongong, or suggest new areas of recognition, we encourage you to nominate for a seat in the Committee.
"The City of Wollongong Awards are about celebrating our community, so it is an absolute necessity that the community has a say in both who is honoured, but also the areas in which they deserve recognition."
