The delivery of the new Northern Heart Centre at the Launceston General Hospital is another step closer, with geotechnical investigations now underway.
Minister for Health, Jacquie Petrusma, said the geotechnical drilling will inform the design of the new building, which will be a lifesaving addition to the Launceston General Hospital.
"This significant investment will improve heart health for Tasmanians in the North and North West, bringing services closer to those who need it most," Minister Petrusma said.
"It will include a new coronary care unit with 16 inpatient cardiac ward beds and seven coronary care unit beds remaining co-located in the Intensive Care Unit.
"The Centre will also have two cardiac catheter labs, where common heart treatments are performed or a surgical pathway is determined, plus dedicated recovery and holding bays.
"This was a key commitment under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, and we are getting on with the job of delivering it, with Tasmanians to benefit as a result."
Localised traffic control and safety barriers will be in place off Frankland Street, with drilling expected to be completed by Friday, 22 November 2024.
The $120 million Northern Heart Centre will deliver more expert cardiology services, including diagnostics procedures and extra ward beds – providing patients and families the very best care possible.
