Northern Territory - Road Safety

Northern Territory Police and Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service are urging Territorians to stay safe on our roads.

Acting Deputy Chief Officer Stephen Hunter said, "Over the past weekend our career and volunteer members, along with NT Police, have attended two major crashes across the Territory with a total of 4 lives lost.

"Responding to this type of tragedy has a significant impact on our first responders including the attending police, volunteer and career firefighters, traffic control officers and the members of the public who are usually first on scene. Not to mention the devastating impact to the loved ones of those who die in these crashes.

"I'd like to acknowledge and thank everyone who assisted with the response to the horrific crashes that occurred on Friday.

"To all Territorians, please take care on the road and remember the fatal 5.

"Wear a seat belt, eliminate distractions, and don't speed or drive under the influence, and manage fatigue.

"Enough is enough."

Assistant Commissioner Matthew Hollamby said, "After the significant loss of life already on Territory roads, the two fatal crashes on Friday have added to an already too high lives lost on road."

Northern Territory Darwin Traffic Operations conducted 1349 breath tests in 3 locations across Darwin on Friday 19 July 2024 which resulted 9 arrests for drink driving, 2 low range, 6 medium range and 1 high range.

Nine drivers were also detected travelling over the speed limit, with infringement notices issued.

Mr Hollamby said "These results are completely unacceptable.

"We cannot be any clearer. The number of lives lost on Territory roads this year is shocking, made more shocking as most could have been avoided by adhering to the fatal 5.

"The ripple effect that a single loss of life has on family members, first responders and the wider community is considerable.

"If you have had a drink or are feeling fatigued, don't get behind the wheel. If you are in a rush, don't speed or if you have received a text don't reply while driving.

"It is not worth dying for."
