NQPHN Announces Forthcoming Distress Brief Support Codesign Sessions

NQPHN

What is Distress Brief Support?

Distress Brief Support (DBS) is a community-based approach to supporting people experiencing distress, combining two kinds of support (outlined below).

  • Members of the community who work in identified community engagement points will be trained to provide immediate compassionate support to people who are experiencing distress.
  • The DBS short-term support team will provide compassionate practical support, and work to establish connections with and for the person to longer-term support relevant to their needs. Through a strengths-based approach, the team will empower the person to cope with their distress by promoting positive help-seeking behaviours.

The Tablelands and Mareeba region is one of six sites across Australia trialling this new approach. Whilst all of the sites will share a common vision, objectives, and principles, each will differ on where and how the approach is implemented, based on local consultation and codesign activities.

Who should attend the codesign session?

Community members welcome to attend the codesign session include:

  • anyone who lives in the Tablelands and Mareeba region that has a lived experience of experiencing distress
  • anyone who cares for, or has cared for, someone experiencing distress
  • anyone who is interested in helping to shape the DBS service for the Tablelands and Mareeba region.
