MEDIA RELEASE

Monday 16th September

The Nature Conservation Council of New South Wales (NCC), the state's leading environmental advocacy organisation, has today welcomed the NSW Government's Consumer Energy Strategy which will make it easier for households to access clean energy and lower their bills.

Under the strategy, NSW will become the first state in Australia with targets for household solar PV and battery uptake, virtual power plant participation and household electrification.

The strategy includes a range of new targets, incentives, educational and regulatory measures which will help ensure every household has access to cheap and clean renewable energy - reducing cost of living pressures, creating healthier homes and cutting emissions.

NCC is particularly excited to see the commitment for targets to support the uptake of electrification by households and small businesses. Electrification is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce emissions and cut energy bills. We urge the government to go bold and be ambitious when setting these new targets.

NCC also strongly welcomes that NSW will introduce a right to install EV chargers in the Strata Schemes Management Act 2015 so owners' corporations cannot unreasonably refuse EV chargers.

Statements attributable to NCC Chief Executive Officer Jacqui Mumford

"Increased support for household solar, batteries and electrification are all critical measures to ensure NSW gets back on track to meeting our legislated climate targets.

"These measures are a win-win for everyone: lowering bills, creating healthier homes, cutting emissions and supporting more local jobs.

"The development of targets to support household electrification is really exciting. Replacing polluting gas appliances with efficient electric heat pumps is one of the best cost saving measures any household can take, with great climate benefits too."
