More than 1,000 social housing properties in New South Wales (NSW) will benefit from energy performance upgrades to their homes.
This is part of the Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative (SHEPI). SHEPI is a $175 million initiative being delivered through matched funding from the Commonwealth and NSW Governments. It is providing crucial upgrades to reduce energy bills, keep homes more liveable year-round, and lower emissions.
It will support a range of energy efficient upgrades including:
- solar sharing systems
- split system air conditioning
- heat pump hot water heating
- ceiling insulation
- electric stoves.
These upgrades will help ensure that homes are more affordable to maintain and better equipped to withstand changing environmental conditions.
Tenants are also provided with guidance on how to best operate their home efficiently with the new features.
Since SHEPI's launch in January this year, the program has delivered upgrades to households in Regional NSW and Western Sydney. More upgrades are planned to be rolled out across NSW.
The households have included a mix of NSW Government-owned and managed homes, along with those managed by Aboriginal community housing providers.
Approximately 24,000 social housing dwellings in NSW are set to benefit through the course of the initiative to June 2027.
SHEPI is a collaboration between the Commonwealth and NSW Governments. This includes the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, Homes NSW, the Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO), and both Aboriginal and Community Housing Providers.
