Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Sustainability Plan 2024-2028 has launched

The 2024-2028 Plan outlines our commitment to climate resilience, resource efficiency and working towards net zero while continuing to deliver high quality health care that doesn't place additional burden on finances, community or the local environment.

Driven by the Sustainability Committee, the Plan defines initiatives and targets across six key focus areas:

  • Climate Risk and Adaptation
  • Caring for Country
  • Sustainable Facilities
  • Sustainable Clinical Care
  • Green Travel
  • Waste and Circular Economy

NBMLHD Chief Executive, Lee Gregory, says the new Sustainability Plan builds on the many important projects already underway across the District.

"We are committed to ensuring our readiness for the impacts from predicted climate change and to do our part in working towards net zero carbon emissions," says Lee.

"The new Plan will drive our environmental ambitions and ensure that we continue to be a role model in shaping sustainable healthcare," says Lee.

Based on key state and national policy directions, feedback from staff champions and working groups, as well as best practice evidence on health care and climate change, NBMLHD already has robust structures and governance in place to deliver on its sustainability aims.

Initiatives implemented from the previous Sustainability Plan by committed members of Working Groups include:

  • Completing a draft climate risk assessment for facilities and services
  • Completing a Carbon Footprinting Project at Nepean Hospital
  • Achieving a 4-Star Green Star As-Built Design rating for Stage 1 Nepean Hospital Redevelopment
  • Roll out of the Energy Performance Contract which has seen the installation of solar, LED lighting and mechanical upgrades that improve energy efficiency across five of our facilities.
