NSW Opens Applications for Aboriginal Languages Board

NSW Gov

Applications are now open for new board members to lead and drive the important work of the NSW Aboriginal Languages Trust (ALT) over the next five years.

The ALT is a NSW Government agency, established in 2017, that aims to keep alive and revitalise Aboriginal languages at local, regional, and state levels.

The inaugural ALT Board, appointed for a five-year term in February 2020, has taken Aboriginal language revitalisation in NSW from strength to strength, guided by the voices and aspirations of Aboriginal communities across the state.

To continue Aboriginal languages revitalisation activities from 2025 to 2030, the trust is seeking to appoint a board that reflects the diversity of language groups, geographical representation across NSW, is independent and well connected with community.

ALT Board roles are identified positions for Aboriginal people.

Applications for all board members, including the chair and deputy chair, close on 7 October, 2024.

NSW remains the only jurisdiction in Australia to enact legislation that recognises the importance of Aboriginal languages and establishes mechanisms and investment to help strengthen them.

The growth and strengthening of Aboriginal languages and culture is a key outcome for Closing the Gap, a national commitment to improve outcomes for Aboriginal people.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Treaty David Harris said:

"Since its establishment in 2017, the Aboriginal Language Trust has celebrated and strengthened Aboriginal Languages in NSW through initiatives such as annual grants and, in 2023, the first ever NSW Aboriginal Languages Week.

"The new Aboriginal Language Trust Board positions are a unique opportunity for Aboriginal people to shape the future of Aboriginal language revitalisation in NSW.

"I am proud of our Government's investment to support Aboriginal communities to re-awaken languages.

"Language means a lot to Aboriginal communities - it's part of their heritage and has shaped who they are today so must be preserved, strengthened and celebrated for generations to come."
