NSW Schools to Shine at Royal Easter Show

NSW Department of Education

NSW Department of Education Secretary Murat Dizdar will join thousands of public school students from across the state for the Show School Day at the Royal Easter Show on Friday 11 April.

One of Australia's most endearing public displays and largest ticketed events in the world, 'The Show' is now in its 203rd year and returns to the Sydney Showground at Olympic Park.

NSW public schools' long tradition with The Show continues with dozens of schools from across the state getting hands-on with agriculture, artisan foods and amusements.

Highlights include:

  • Narooma High School students "sleeping out" at The Show for the week, staying right next door to their steers, heifers and stud animals ahead of competition.
  • More than 150 students from 17 schools operating the Rural Students Café, cooking and serving high tea and drinks to show-goers. Students are completing their Certificate II in Hospitality or Certificate II in Cookery, with the experience counting towards their work placement for these qualifications.
  • Narromine High School's 35 students and five teachers who are the beneficiaries of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW Youth Group's All Roads to the Royal program four-day trip to The Show.
  • Brunswick Heads Public School Assistant Principal Madeleine Kirwan-Edwards competing in the wood-chopping world titles.

Mr Dizdar, who will spend the day visiting competitions involving school students and the teachers and staff supporting them, said he was impressed to see the breadth of entries by public schools.

"I can't wait to talk to students who are so passionate about competing and getting real-life experience of what working in agricultural industries will entail," Mr Dizdar said.

"Among the show bags, gravity-defying rides and displays, our public schools are sure to prove they are best in class across multiple competitions.

"Our dedicated school staff give up so much of their free time to support their students and I want to thank them for their commitment to opening up opportunities for our students."

Visiting students to The Show don't miss out either, gaining a wonderful snapshot of Australian agriculture activities, competitions and performances across its 12 days. Student workbooks are available at The Show, tailored to different year levels and curriculum areas.
