NSW SES Prepares Flood Rescue Amid Intensifying Rainfall

NSW SES

The NSW State Emergency Services (SES) has responded to more than 240 incidents in the past 24 hours as heavy rainfall causes flash flooding in the Illawarra, South Coast and Sydney

regions.

Flood warnings have been issued today, asking people to stay informed about possible minor flooding overnight at St Georges Basin, the Mourya River, Bega River, Deua River and the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley.

The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted Illawarra and South Coast communities could see isolated rainfall totals up to 200 millimetres during Saturday night and into Sunday.

NSW SES State Duty Commander, Assistant Commissioner Nicole Hogan, said flash flooding was a real risk in these communities, and that it could occur rapidly and without warning.

"We know there's already some roads closed throughout the Illawarra and South Coast regions due to flash flooding, and I encourage everyone to heed the advice of emergency services and never take the risk of driving through floodwater," Assistant Commissioner Hogan said.

"You don't know what damage or debris is below the surface."

The NSW SES is aware Warragamba Dam is at capacity and is expected to spill.

"No significant flooding consequences are expected, however, people downstream of the dam are warned that fast flowing or deep water near waterways and floodplains may be hazardous," Assistant Commissioner Hogan said.

"We will continue to work with the Bureau of Meteorology and Water NSW to monitor any potential impacts in that community."

NSW SES flood rescue operators are on standby today, ready to respond to any calls for assistance.

"Our highly-skilled in water and on water flood rescue operators have been prepositioned so they can respond as quickly as possible should there be a need," Assistant Commissioner Hogan said.
