Current warnings:

Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds for people in Illawarra, South Coast and parts of Mid North Coast, Hunter, Metropolitan, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains and North West Slopes and Plains Forecast Districts.

Damaging wind gusts from the west to northwest with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are expected across the central and southern ranges and coastal parts of the Illawarra and South Coast this morning. Winds should broadly ease by midday on Thursday, though they could persist into early afternoon for the far southeast of the State.

A flood watch has been issued for minor to moderate flooding for the Upper Murray, Murray (Corowa), Mitta Mitta and Snowy Rivers.

Significant wind observations to 11:00 PM AEDT Wednesday include:

126 km/h recorded at Thredbo

102 km/h at Murrurundi Gap

98 km/h at Scone

93 km/h at Mt Ginini

NSW SES Incidents since commencement of weather event: 421

NSW SES is expecting calls and incidents to increase over the next few hours as people report overnight activity associated with high winds and rainfall.

The majority of calls have been for leaking and damaged roofs, and trees down on properties.

Safety messaging:

  • It is still dark, we expect roads to be slippery and potentially impacted by fallen trees. There may be water over some roads and causeways as a result of the rainfall. Exercise caution when driving. If you come across a flooded road, pull over, wait for conditions to improve or find an alternative route. Never drive through flooded roads.
  • Check road conditions at Live Traffic and your local council website before travelling on roads.
  • Strong winds will persist in parts of the state throughout the morning. Stay away from trees and fallen powerlines. Secure loose items around your properties and stay indoors if possible.
