As Australia's Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) gear up to phase out 3G networks by the end of 2024, the NSW Telco Authority (NSWTA) is urging communities, businesses and individuals to prepare for the transition. The move comes as part of a broader industry shift towards more advanced 4G and 5G technologies.
Australia's three national major mobile network operators are shutting down their 3G mobile networks which will result in 3G services no longer being available across the country.
TPG Telecom completed closure of its 3G network in January 2024. Telstra is scheduled to close its 3G network at the end of June 2024 and Optus is scheduled to commence closure of its 3G network in September 2024.
All mobile users with 3G-only handsets will need to upgrade to at least a 4G device to continue to receive a mobile service. All smartphones released over recent years are able to access 4G networks and many also have 5G connectivity.
The NSW Government acknowledges the joint efforts of commercial MNOs and the Australian Government in raising awareness about the impending switch-off and assisting individuals and businesses in preparing for this change.
Access to mobile networks is vital for communication during emergencies, allowing individuals to connect with emergency services and keep in touch with loved ones. However, concerns loom over the potential impact on communities, particularly in those regional, rural, and remote areas, where 3G remains the primary form of mobile coverage.
The MNOs are planning to establish equivalent or better 4G/5G coverage footprints compared with those of their current 3G networks. Should this not be complete by the time the 3G networks are decommissioned, one of the key concerns raised by NSWTA is the risk to public safety during emergencies and disaster events. Without access to reliable mobile networks, communities will not be able to call 000 in the event of an emergency.
If equivalent coverage is not achieved in time, regional and remote communities face further digital exclusion, as individuals and businesses in these communities depend on digital access for essential services, including work, education, and leisure activities.
Individuals and communities who are currently reliant on 3G devices are encouraged to check if their devices are compatible with newer networks by contacting their mobile service provider or visiting the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) website.
