The Territory Labor Government backs our hard working police and we are ensuring they have all the resources and support they need to perform their duties.
The demands on our Police force have changed over the past 10 years and a review of NT Police and their resources is necessary to assess how our frontline officers can be better supported.
The review will identify where improvements can be made to make the jobs of our police as easy as possible.
Former NT Police officer and NT Police Association President Vince Kelly will lead the review, along with the support of a team senior police and government officials with expertise in policing, human resources and finance.
Mr Kelly began his policing career in 1987 and worked in a variety of locations and positions across the Territory, before being elected as the president of the NT Police Association for over a decade. He also served as the President of the Police Federation of Australia for seven years.
The review will focus on:
1. Staffing structures and staff operations
2. Employee well-being, including fatigue management and minimum staffing levels
3. Remote and regional policing modelling to enhance community outcomes
4. Organisational culture, leadership practices, diversity and inclusion
5. Review of General Orders and other policies to ensure they are fit-for-purpose
6. The design and application of policing systems, including response protocols, internal communications and integration of modern technologies to improve policing
7. Current budget trends and resource distribution across operational units, capital expenditure and revenue streams
The review will commence on September 1, with a final report to be provided to the NT Government by the end of March, 2024.
Quotes from Chief Minister Natasha Fyles:
"Our government backs our hardworking police force and acknowledges the tremendous effort they undertake each and every day to keep our community safe.
"We know that the demands on our police force and resources has changed in the past decade and we need to look at how we can improve and modernise our force - and ensure those who support us are also being supported.
"Since 2016 we have been backing our police through a budget increase of over $120 million, more boots on the ground and new police stations and better facilities - but this review will allow us to take an even deeper dive into our force and see where else we can support them."
Quotes from Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Kate Worden:
"Our police officers are the best in the nation and we need to ensure we are doing everything we can to make their jobs as easy as possible.
"We have worked closely with the NT Police Association since their change of leadership to ensure they have been engaged in this process.
