Chief Minister and Police Minister Lia Finocchiaro joined celebrations at tonight's graduation ceremony for Recruit Constable Squad 157, welcoming the newest members of the Northern Territory Police as they begin their careers serving the community.
The graduation of 27 new officers marks a significant step in delivering on the government's commitment to bolstering police numbers in key regional areas.
11 of the new officers will be stationed in Katherine, while 10 will head to Alice Springs-ensuring stronger frontline policing in these critical communities.
Others will be deployed across Darwin and Wadeye.
Mrs Finocchiaro congratulated the graduates on their achievement.
"These officers have demonstrated their commitment to serving and protecting the Northern Territory. Their deployment to Katherine and Alice Springs fulfils an important commitment we made to these communities during school holidays to increase local police numbers and enhance community safety," she said.
The new constables come from diverse backgrounds, with 17 of the 27 graduates hailing from the Northern Territory.
Among them are individuals who have transitioned from auxiliary roles, moved from interstate, and even one recruit from New Zealand, all answering the call to serve.
"These new officers join the ranks of an exceptional police force, and we are committed to ensuring they have the tools and powers to do their jobs safely and effectively," said Mrs Finocchiaro.
Since launching our Reducing Crime package in October, we are now giving police stronger powers of entry and are rewriting the Youth Justice and Traffic Acts to deliver real reforms that support our police.
The Chief Minister and Police Minister also extended her gratitude to the families and friends of the new officers, acknowledging their support and sacrifice in enabling their loved ones to pursue a career in policing.
"This is a proud moment not just for the graduates, but for their families, friends, and the wider community. The people of the Northern Territory are counting on them, and we know they will serve with courage and dedication," said Mrs Finocchiaro.
Delivering a year of action and security for Territorians, the Northern Territory Government remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting police and delivering community safety.
