Seasonally adjusted industry and household greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Aotearoa New Zealand decreased 0.7 percent (136 kilotonnes) in the September 2024 quarter, according to figures released by Stats NZ today.
"The decrease in emissions this quarter came mainly from manufacturing, with falls in emissions recorded in most other industries," environment statistics spokesperson Tehseen Islam said.
Over this quarter, industry emissions (excluding households) decreased by 1.2 percent (204 kilotonnes). By comparison, gross domestic product decreased 1.0 percent in the same period.

Emissions attributed to households rose 0.3 percent (6 kilotonnes) in the September 2024 quarter.
Manufacturing main driver of decrease
The largest decrease in emissions came from manufacturing, down 6.2 percent (120 kilotonnes). This decrease was larger than the 2.6 percent fall in GDP from manufacturing over the same period.
"Manufacturing emissions have fallen for four consecutive quarters," Islam said.
"This quarter's decline was driven by the petroleum, chemical, polymer, and rubber product manufacturing and metal product manufacturing industries."
Emissions from transport, postal, and warehousing were also down by 2.8 percent (46 kilotonnes), while agriculture, forestry, and fishing emissions decreased by 0.1 percent (13 kilotonnes).
Mining was the only industry to show an increase in emissions, up 2.3 percent (7 kilotonnes).

Annual emissions rise
In the year ended September 2024, New Zealand industry and households emitted 78,925 kilotonnes of GHGs. This was 0.5 percent higher than the 78,509 kilotonnes emitted in the previous September year.
The most significant contributor to this rise was the electricity, gas, water, and waste services industry, up 27 percent (1,687 kilotonnes). The transport, postal, and warehousing industry increased 5.9 percent (367 kilotonnes), mainly driven by international aviation.
Agriculture, forestry, and fishing emissions decreased 2.1 percent (924 kilotonnes) in the year ended September 2024, while manufacturing decreased 7.2 percent (629 kilotonnes) over the same period.
