Emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash on State Highway 3, Otorohanga, near Awatene Road.
Police were called about 7.55am.
One person has died following the crash.
Another person is understood to be in a critical condition.
The Serious Crash Unit will attend the scene.
The road is closed with diversions in place.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
