OAS Group Boosts Women's Political Role in Ecuador

OAS

The High Level Group of the Organization of American States (OAS) to promote the implementation of the recommendations of the Electoral Observation Missions of the Organization on women's political participation began a working visit on July 15 to 16, 2024 to Ecuador, at the invitation of the National Electoral Council.

The delegation, headed by the former President of Costa Rica and coordinator of the High Level Group, Laura Chinchilla, will meet with various government authorities, electoral bodies, political and social actors of Ecuador to discuss initiatives that facilitate the implementation of the recommendations of the OAS Electoral Missions and learn about the work that various institutions are promoting on the matter.

Ecuador has taken significant steps to generate increasingly equitable conditions for women's political participation, with important advances in areas such as the implementation of horizontal parity measures and the approval of regulations to prevent, punish and eradicate political violence against women. There are areas where it is possible to deepen efforts, strengthen the participation of women in decision-making and implement measures that guarantee the sustainability and consolidation of progress.

The work of the High Level Group is possible thanks to the financial support of the governments of Canada and Italy.
