On October 9th, the General Secretariat announced that the Organization of American States (OAS) has joined the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty as a founding member. The initiative is a priority of Brasil's G20 presidency and aims to mobilize resources and knowledge for implementing effective public policies to reduce food insecurity and poverty in the world.

"We are deeply honored and confident that the OAS will make a fundamental contribution to the success of this initiative," said Wellington Dias, Minister of Social Development and Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger. "The Alliance is open to voluntary participation by interested countries and organizations. If we work together, the Global Alliance will be the best legacy we could leave for future generations," he added.

In a statement, the OAS recognizes that hunger and malnutrition are "perverse and ethically unacceptable manifestations of structural poverty and inequality". It also emphasizes its commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which include eradicating hunger and poverty, and working to ensure that more rights reach more people.

As a founding member of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, the OAS "is at the disposal of all others to align actions, develop innovative solutions and share practices and experiences that contribute to the tackle against poverty and inequality".

The statement also stresses the organization's commitment to the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty's mission to accelerate cooperation at the global, regional, national and local levels to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality.

Although it was developed within the G20, the Alliance is open to all countries, international organizations, educational institutions, development funds and banks, and philanthropic foundations.
