OAS Mission Confident in Ecuador Election Results

OAS

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Ecuador, led by former Chilean Foreign Minister Heraldo Muñoz, expresses its confidence in the official results presented by the National Electoral Council (CNE) last night. The OAS Mission emphasizes that citizens expressed themselves peacefully and forcefully during voting.

The Mission wishes to emphasize that the data provided by the CNE's Computerized System of Counting and Results coincides with the information compiled by the OAS observers deployed in the country. In addition, the Mission team compared tally sheets at the observed polling stations and was able to verify a match between the tally sheets transmitted, those received by the parties, and those returned in the electoral packet.

Likewise, the Mission believes it is important to respect established institutional mechanisms for any claims that may arise. As its work continues on the ground, the OAS Mission expresses its willingness to receive documentation should any stakeholder deem it relevant.

As after the First Round, the OAS Mission observed that previous polls and exit polls did not accurately predict the results.. These tools generate erroneous and often unrealistic expectations. Their partisan use is something that various OAS Missions have noted in previous elections in Ecuador.

Tomorrow, the Mission will present its preliminary report, which will include findings and recommendations for future electoral processes. The document will address positive progress and those aspects that need to be addressed.

Finally, the Mission invites citizens to await the outcome of the final stages of this process with patience and civic spirit. Democratic coexistence is essential for the country's future.
