The second Mid-Term Meeting of the G20 Social Oceans20 (O20) Engagement Group will be held on July 1, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Brasília time. The online meeting is an important opportunity for experts and citizens to debate solutions towards ocean preservation. This event is the second in a series of three official meetings with the aim of presenting, selecting and consolidating civil society proposals related to the ocean.

Experts will analyze recent advances, propose solutions, and explore new avenues of collaboration leading up to the O20 Summit in September and the G20 Summit in November, both in Rio de Janeiro. Key O20 recommendations will also be presented at the July 1 conference. These are the results of discussions by global institutions committed to the oceans agenda and the perspectives offered by Oceans Dialogues, a series of events promoted by citizens.

The Oceans20 Engagement Group's discussions began in 2022, in Indonesia, and the group was institutionalized in 2024, under Brasil's G20 presidency. To Dr Simone Pennafirme, a marine biologist who is member of the UNESCO Chair and organizer of the Engagement Group, "Oceans20 is innovative and unprecedented within the scope of the G20, uniting member nations, global corporations and civil society representatives in collaborative efforts to harmonize economic interests with ocean preservation".

Dr Alexander Turra, professor at University of São Paulo's Oceanographic Institute (Instituto Oceanográfico da Universidade de São Paulo/ IOUSP) and coordinator of the UNESCO Chair for Ocean Sustainability, highlights the importance of the ocean agenda to global sustainability. "The ocean connects all of us. It provides transport for 90% of the global trade; is the backbone of the internet, because submarine cables run through it; and creates jobs for more than 3 billion people. If the ocean were a country, it would be the world's 7th economy. Therefore, every decision made by G20 members will bring great impacts, and we count on the climate-ocean community in this collective construction towards the ocean we want, and considering the current climate emergency."

Oceans20 is coordinated by the UNESCO Chair for Ocean Sustainability in collaboration with the UN Global Compact; the World Economic Forum; the Brazilian Biodiversity Fund (Fundo Brasileiro para a Biodiversidade/ FUNBIO); the National Institute for Ocean Research (Instituto Nacional para Pesquisas Oceânicas/ INPO); and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, as well as several other national and international partners.
